Amsterdam ranks third in Euromonitor's City Destinations Index 2022
Euromonitor International has released its latest edition of the Top 100 City Destinations Index, revealing the top cities around the world in terms of tourism potential and popularity. The index is designed to offer a comprehensive analysis of key and emerging city hubs, helping businesses, tourism organizations, and destinations identify cities that are showing strong tourism growth potential. The ranking is based on 57 metrics split into six key areas, including economic and business performance, tourism performance, tourism infrastructure, tourism policy and attractiveness, health and safety, and sustainability.
For the fourth year in a row, Amsterdam has secured a podium place in the global ranking, taking the third position behind Paris and Dubai. The Dutch capital's performance was let down in the Health and Safety category, but it excelled in the Economic and Business Performance and Tourism Policy and Attractiveness categories. The index also revealed that two German cities made it into the top 10, with Munich and Berlin taking the seventh and eighth spots, respectively.
Despite efforts by the Amsterdam municipality to limit the growth of tourist-targeted businesses and the number of overnight stays in the city, the city continues to attract tourists, cementing its position as a leading global destination. In fact, the city's performance in this year's index is especially noteworthy given the recent announcement of plans to introduce tougher rules in the Red Light District by the spring of this year.
Interestingly, Amsterdam also performed well in a separate ranking that highlighted the top cities for economic and business opportunities. The city came in third place, behind Singapore and Taipei and beating the likes of Hong Kong and London. This ranking is a testament to the city's potential as a business hub and highlights the city's allure as a destination that can cater to both leisure and business travelers.
The 2022 City Destinations Index revealed that European cities dominate the top spots, with Paris beating out Dubai to claim the top spot in the ranking. Italian, Spanish, and Greek cities also performed well, with multiple cities from these countries making it to the top 100. The index serves as a useful tool for businesses, tourism organizations, and destinations looking to identify cities with strong tourism growth potential and will likely influence future investments in the tourism industry.
