The Netherlands ranks among the worst nations in the European Union for food waste, according to data recently released by the European statistics office Eurostat.
There are 161 kg of food waste per person in the Netherlands
According to data from 2020, 161 kilos of food were wasted for every person living in the Netherlands, which is much more than the 127 kilograms per person average for Europe and places the Netherlands as the fifth-worst country in the EU for food waste.
59 of the 161 kilos came from the manufacturing and processing processes. 59 kilograms more were produced by homes and families than the EU average of 70 kilos per person.

In 2020, the following nations produced the greatest food waste per person:
- Cyprus
- Denmark
- Greece
- Portugal
- The Netherlands
Slovenia threw away the least food, averaging just 68 kilograms per person
