GVB introduces a summertime 1-euro public transportation ticket

GVB, which runs public transportation in Amsterdam, Duivendrecht, Schiphol, Amstelveen, Diemen, and Weesp, announced on Thursday a substantial summertime discount on day tickets. Those who live in or work near Amsterdam will be able to purchase a 24-hour ticket for just 1 euro instead of the standard 8,50 euros.

Many improvements have been made to public transportation recently, according to commercial director Ellen Swinkels. "We are receiving more and more electric buses, brand-new trams are driving," she says. "It's time to use public transportation for an entire day again. You may traverse Amsterdam for a full day for one euro. You are unable to park for that."

Given that they were severely impacted by the coronavirus epidemic and have not yet fully recovered, GVB is hoping that the project will reduce the number of cars on the road during the summer vacations and increase the number of passengers. Anyone interested in using the 1-euro ticket can request one by filling out a form on the GVB website. All tickets must be utilized by September 30 at the latest, and applications will be accepted until August 26.

Will rail travel be made free or less expensive in the Netherlands as well?

Due to the high rates of inflation and growing costs experienced by countries around Europe, a number of governments and public transportation providers have decided to provide travelers with inexpensive or even free public transportation tickets throughout the summer. The highly popular 9-euro ticket was introduced in Germany in June, and this week the Spanish government decided that many short-distance rail routes will be free from September to December.

The Dutch government thinks it is doubtful that it will follow in the footsteps of its European neighbors by offering free or significantly subsidized train travel, even though GVB is starting something similar in Amsterdam. Although it's a good idea, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management concerns whether it would be successful in getting more people to travel the train and believes it would cost the taxpayer at least four billion euros.

A similar sentiment was expressed by Oscar van Elferen of Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS): "We think it's a really fantastic concept, but the question is who will pay for it? We are unable to provide an affordable ticket ourselves. We lack the funds to cover that.
